Separate Revit Content By Use

Is there anyway to separate Revit content by use? For instance, if I'm working on a 2d diagram the only symbols that would be available in the symbol command would be related to that task? I would also like to limit the types of line styles that are available in the detail line command. I don't want to just add more families or styles because the list I have to search thru to pick what I actually want become huge.

OOTB? Not really. But the addition of in-browser search to recent versions has helped trawl through families (loaded in your project) somewhat.

Ultimately though you're going to end up looking for "something more" - in which case be sure to check out KiwiCodes' Family Browser - which works (if you, and they, will excuse the comparison) a lot like Design Center did/does in AutoCAD.

Avail & Unifi also have content management solutions that interface with Revit.

The firm I work at just transitioned from UNIFI to AVAIL.

The major reason was that Avail can also hold other types of content that is not just RFA or RVT. I guess as Avail is made by Archvision, you can of course store Archvision content, but we're also keeping all or our stuff there, for e.g., Dynamo scripts, etc., etc.

Apparently Unifi would only let you only keep RFA and RVT.

Otherwise, I couldn't see much difference [the one mentioned above is a BIG diff. though] but Unifi had much better / cooler graphics.

CTC is also releasing a new tool called Hive. I haven't used it but the little bit I saw of the demo looks promising.

They also have BIM List Browser / BIM List Server, which is more of a *standard* content Navigator. But HIVE goes well above and beyond that. Im still using the BLB/BLS combination now. Will be doing a webinar on it in two weeks.

can CTC's do other file types like AVAIL? or at least can harvest RVT i.e. fetch details from RVT, etc

If we are talking about BLB/BLS: RVT's and Groups: yes. Other formats, i dont believe so. Not sure about HIVE.
