I am basically starting the Revit division at my work. Right now I am creating a template so when other people send us designs I can link it to our template. I have already imported tags and title blocks. My question is about views, at first I was thinking I would create 10 floors of views, that way if we do a multi floor project the views will already be there. But that wouldnt work if the floors are different heights. Is there a way to copy the view from a linked revit file? Should I create pre existing views on our template? Whats the best way to do this?

We started out with only 2 floors in our Template, assuming people coulld "just" add floors if they needed them.
Then we issued a project (yes, Issued) that had a lot of Sheets with a THRID Floor. Never got caught in QA.
So after that, we bumped it up to 5 floors plus a Lower Level.
Since our typical project has several floors, each of which may have 2 or three Zone, and each of those having up to a dozen different Sheet Types (Existing, Demo, Floor Plan, Equipment, Furniture, Presentation, RCP, etc) they add up fast.
It's a lot easier to delete Views and Sheets than it is to add them.
And that way they already can have View Templates associated.
As far as the actual Elevations of the Levels, that's a piece of cake to Link in the consultant's model, go into an Exterior Elevation and adjust your Level's Elevations to match theirs.Dave Plumb

This has been my working assumption as well... but I'm thinking of leveraging Dynamo to manage all of this. No reason we can't get D to generate all the various views with view templates on demand (at least I don't think there is).Originally posted by DaveP View PostGreg McDowell Jr

None at all, save some (extensive) error checking (for existing views/sheets) and then there's the "one time" value of such a .dyn (you aren't going to run it twice on the same model, not once you've started ano. work anyway) - but since we're smashing out close-to-30 stories lately, that's what's I've got pre-populated in our template.Originally posted by GMcDowellJr View PostComment

There isnt a reason, its just a much more complex Dynamo Graph. My current Template levels go +9, and =3, for 12 total. I have a Dynamo Graph with sliders, for REMOVING the excess stuff you dont want, but i would much rather have an additive graph.Originally posted by GMcDowellJr View Post

One of my clients has a 12 level version of my template, but they do some much taller work. They have loved the benefits of it, and are asking about adding another 20 levels in to the template. I would much rather send them a graph that does it, but it would have to work extraordinarily well.Comment

I've got a couple things to work out. In addition to creating the views, which I think should be easy enough, I also have a need to change titleblock size. Nearly everything I've done in the past 10 years has been 30x42. This firm does a lot of 24x36 and a fair amount of 36x48. My plan is to setup the sheets for each, record/export the viewport locations, and use these values to recreate the sheet with Dynamo. Instead of having any sheets in the template, the user will select sheet size, number of levels above/below, which internal scope boxes to use for enlarged views, and the graph will take over. Yeah, its way more than Plan sheets, though, for me. There are schedules on sheets, there are Different Overall Plans and Area Plans. And they are easy to filter and make copies of, but i havent gotten it ALL worked out for doing all of it, at this point.Comment

creating project template on the fly is my to-do-list for quite some time but not actually being implemented yet, too many variables and extensive UIs are needed if including all factors, Dynamo may have limitation (at least on UI side) but API sure can achieve most if not all, no such utility tool yet in App store or elsewhere?Comment

Ehhhh. If im being an arrogant ***** about it, i would say: No tool exists, because just about every person out there builds templates differently, and what is a *good and complete template* is open to interpretation. I saw someone on twitter bragging about an app that *BUILDS REVIT TEMPLATES FROM EXCEL* on twitter the other day. And im sure it actually works really well, but no offense to the creator: All it does it manage some of the object styles, or specific settings in a template, like Text or DIM Styles. It doesnt come anywhere NEAR the level of complete that i would consider "real."
But, certainly every person who makes a template COULD write down all the things that exist on "a hypothetical LEVEL 2" of a project, and then someone could go from there to make a Dynamo Graph. (I say L2 because L1 always has all the special stuff from the template connected to it...)Comment

agreed, better to develop in-house and for internal use, also should have seed (or level 1) template to be based upon, etc.Comment
