I am suddenly able to open a project linked to my open project without getting the "This model is linked into one or more open documents..." message and being forced to unload the link in the open the file. I've done this twice in two days, so I know it's happening. Isn't this a big deal, and if so did I miss the announcement? No work sharing in either file. All that's missing now is the ability to right-click the link and "reload link" from the context menu.
EDIT: resolved, see post #5 below.

still works the old way in R2016 and older versions. Are you using R2017? I haven't done a project in R2017 yet so haven't run into that "feature"...
I believe it's working the same was as it always has. as long as both models are central models, you should be able to open local files of each with no issue. it's only when you open a central that it asks you to unload.

More information: I'm running R2017. These are not central files; there is no worksharing. Revit used to warn about having to unlink to open, today it doesn't. I've attached the warning that no longer occurs.
I've stumbled upon what's happening here: I'm running Windows via Parallels on my Mac. If I open a file that is linked to an open file by double clicking on it in the Mac Finder window, it opens without Revit requiring it to be unloaded in the previously opened file. Unfortunately, I can't do the same thing from the Windows File Explorer.
