why can't you use a parametric dimension at the side the same way you did at the top? Eq/Eq to the horizontal ref plane then an instance parameter for height. If you want to schedule the heights make the parameter shared

Thank you for your help. I did not make this so I am not sure how they did it for the side. I downloaded it from revitcity so I am not sure how they made the top that way. I am trying to learn how to make families so I am not sure. How would I go about it?

            Thanks, Kate

check this out. Width or height for pretty much any family content is done the same way. When you load your family into the project and you select it you will get the little blue arrows so you can either manually adjust the width/height or you can fill in a value in the Properties palette. If you are using the center ref plane at the sides as your dimension point and in the project the width of the "jamb" changes, back in the family dimension from the center ref plane to the outside ref plane at each side and lock the dimensions. That will keep the jamb width the same regardless of the overall width. I'm assuming that your original screen shot is a window?
