Placing Recessed Cans into an in-place ceiling component

I have a user in our office who is struggling to place recessed can lights into an in-place ceiling component. She keeps getting the dreaded "circular chain of reference" error message. I cannot seem to figure this one out, so I am turning you all.

The ceiling is for an auditorium space where there are quite a few angular planes.

I have tried everything from making sure the geometry wasn't joined with anything else to rebuilding it. I'm stuck.

What recessed can lights are you trying to put in? Are they face based, ceiling based, work plane based?

She is using the ceiling based lights that come OOTB, but I have tried other fixtures and get the same results. I have only tried ceiling based families though.

The issue likely resides in how the in-place ceiling was created. Is it built using parameters and constraints, or is it completely freeform?

Do you have an image you can show of the ceiling or a purged project file that contains just the ceiling in question?
