Details: In Project or In Separate File?

We are trying to implement Revit as our office standard for our BIM platform. One question we have been discussing is how details (greater scale than 3/4") work and we have two thoughts on this one.

Thought One: Details should all be based on live model geometry within each project and be detailed using detail components, filled regions, and line work where needed then annotated using keynotes and text. Then the details can be sheeted in the project and referenced as needed.

Thought Two: Similar details should be grouped together in a file on our office network with details created using detail components, filled regions, and line work then annotated using keynotes and text. When a detail is needed in a specific project, then it will be inserted (using Insert Views From File) and placed on a sheet.

Right now we are doing both ways where some of the smaller scale details (wall sections for example) are done with model geometry with detail components on top and some of the wall details are using our "typical" old AutoCAD details that have been traced over in a separate file.

Just wanted to get thoughts on this, see if there are any advantages or disadvantages with each way, or to see if there's a third or superior way.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts and comments.

Details that can stand on their own without the context of any particular building model themselves probably ought to be part of the office standard library, and shared with projects using the Insert from File you mention. Details that cannot stand on their own, because they lack context, should be in the project itself.

Combination of both....project specific details are created based on the model with detail items added to actual geometry.... Standard details can be pre-created and inserted in as needed.

We do both. We have standard libraries based on Masterspec section number. One project file per, each loaded with standard details to be copied/pasted into projects as needed.
