I'm sure this is a silly question... Revit Links?

When you have other Revit models linked into your model, and you go to VV (or VG) and you hit the + sign next to the linked model, you'll get another link, usually with a number.

What are these and what are they for?

These are the individual instances of each link. Copy a link around a few times and you'll see more numbers added. You can control visibilty of individual links this way.

So, if we only have one copy of the link attached to our model, and we need to adjust visibility of something, should we do it in the Main link, or in the numbered link?

The parent (File name) and the child (numeral, typically) mean different things.

Yes, it does mean that if you copy around 10 instances of a townhouse "House" on a site model, you can have the definition of "House" and then have the Children "Num1, Num2, Num 3, and so on."

Controlling the visibility graphics of the parent affects all Houses. So clicking CUSTOM on the parent means custom "Compared you YOUR Model's VG settings." (The way normal custom works in VG:RVT Link.). Clicking OVERRIDE on the Child instances, however, means overriding the Parent HOUSE definition, for something else.

FWIW, yes, you can use the Linked File instance to segregate schedules. In a door schedule, for instance, you can include the Fileds RVT Link: File Name, and RV Link: Instance.

Correct, however you can't schedule out the links you have in your models as links are not a category on their own. You can only, as Aaron says, segregate other categories.

Well, that would be easy I guess: create a schedule of any category that is used in all models and only add fields RVT Link: File Name, and RV Link: Instance. Then check off "Itemize every Instance" in the Sorting tab.. Or am I missing something here?

what categories are those fields available from? I can't find them in any that I would use but don't have time to go through each and every category to look.
