First posted here I found out that there has been at least a partial solution to a long standing problem.
Anyone in the renovation business has encountered this at some point: you need to replace an existing door or window with a similar-sized new one. To do this, you needed to Demo the existing window and place a new one in the exact same size.
Revit would have a great deal of problems with this, and would usually give an error message as shown in the attachment. This happened because the new window would completely cut out the infilling element and therefor become non-hosted.
To my best knowledge this happened with both these workflows:
1. Copy the window to clipboard and paste aligned to Same Place in the new phase.
2. Place the window from scratch in the New Phase and align to the previous window using dimensions or aligning to a refplane.
It seems that this is partially fixed in 2012 (and according to Carl in 2011 too). Copy/Paste still doesn't work, but you CAN place a new window on exactly the same spot (or place it anywhere in the wall and then align using dimensions). In the attachment also a project with two doors from different phases in exactly the same spot. This deals with a huge issue for me when working on renovations!
