Exclamation Migrating the forum to a new server.

    Hi all.

During this weekend, the forum will be offline for some hours, while we move the forum to a new webhost.

For ~8 months now, we´ve been very pleased with the services of the current host (GlobalGold), but after the recent move to the Virtual Private Server at GlobalGold, we´ve had some issues with the backups, and have experienced downtime on a few to many occasions.

Therefore, we are moving to a new "Managed" Virtual Private Server at ServInt.com - ServInt comes with splendid recommendations from places like the the official vBulletin forums and WebHostingTalk. But besides their terrific services, there are several advantages by hosting the forum at ServInt vs. GlobalGold.
    • The server is fully managed by ServInt.
    • ServInt manages a daily off-server backup, and a remote backup of the Database to our own FTP server, for maximum security.
    • The server is placed in DC, which is a better location for the vast majority of our members.
    • They offer more bandwidth (1TB vs. 0.2TB) and at a slightly lesser cost ($49 vs. the current $62)
    • Rapid and seamless scalability, with more available hosting plans - Which will save us a lot of $ when we outgrow the current plan. (The next plan at GlobalGold is ~$140/Month
More info about the ServInt Essential VPS

During the move, We´ll be keeping you up to date here, and at our Twitter profile. (The forum will be closed, but not un-accessible)
Transferring the 1.1GB database will take at least a couple of hours, including the necessary re-configuration - But before the DNS changes propagate around the world, it could be as much as 24 hours before you´ll reach the new server from revitforum.org - Why we´re working on a temporary url to provide you with during the DNS propagation.

Thanks for your patience and understanding! And hopefully ServInt will be our home for many years to come

Great - sounds good with the new server host
However, i think you made a typo in the headline "Scheduled downtown this weekend!"? Little too much too early?

Thanks Kim! Fixed now... But what do you mean by too early?? I´ve had way too much already, and it´s after 9am, so should be a viable drink? Not?

Really, that's your concern? I'm just freaking out over the 24h possible downtime... In the weekend! That would force me to spend major amounts of quality time with my family...

Yah, I can already hear your kids going: "Mom, what´s that stranger doing here?? Who is he??"

And most likely, the kids will only have to deal with the stranger for a few hours... the 24 hours must be a theoretical time frame - It´s usually no more than 6 hours, and most likely only a couple

I so dont get why these providers limit the monthly bandwidth... I use well over 30GB an hour with my seed server... I wouldnt even last 2 days with 1TB...

Anyways... I like the new host. I too have heard good things about them. And the fact we are starting with them and the 2nd from the bottom hosting package means scalability for the future.

Like always Klaus let me know if you or the admin team ever need any help.

    Thanks for keeping us running.

You probably noticed by now, and may even have read the email I sent out a short while ago... But, here it goes anyway:

During the weekend, we've been carrying thru a scheduled server migration of the RevitForum, which we announced ahead of time, but with a rather optimistic timeframe. We planned for a couple of hours of down time (the time it would take to physically move the forum/database to the new host), but it's turning out to be a couple of days instead. The migration went almost as expected, but we've run in to some major issues with the domain transfer (DNS changes) - The Domain was originally registered thru a Danish domain registrar, who had promised to take care of the DNS changes as soon as they got a "green light" from us - In reality, it took them 30 hours to fulfill that promise! Meaning that the forum is still not accessible thru the revitforum.org domain - Sorry!

The good news is, that the forum is up and running at the new server (though, not accessible), and that we now have our own nameserver address to point the domain to, and that the domain is currently being transferred to a more reliable registrar (ServInt Domains), meaning that we can make DNS changes in seconds, and not hours, (or even days) in the future (Not that we hope we'll ever have to)

Am really sorry for the inconvenience, and thank you for your patience.

(BTW, If you're reading this, you've beyond any doubt landed on the new Forum, and can continue using it as always.)

Real ironic though: you wanted to migrate due to the increasing workload of doing all the servers maintenance yourself...
I'm thinking you put more hours into it the pas few days then the months before combined!

Thanks for all your efforts Klaus!!! (We still love ya, even though you took our precious from us... I know, only a few hours, but still)
