    Trimble: Import Control Points

We got some control points and when we import them to revit they end up somewhere in space, no where near the actual location of the building. Is there a proper way to import control points or trimble points into revit?

How are you importing them? Can you review what their values are prior to seeing them in Revit? I replied to a thread WITH THIS in the past. I used Dynamo to place a family at specific point locations from a source text file.

It's likely that yours are far from the building if shared coordinates have not been resolved.

they provided a dwg civil file and a txt file with coordinate points, we us the trimble plug in for revit. I don't have much experience with civil files so I don't know where to begin trouble shooting the process.

    Thanks

Okay, let's back up. What are you trying to do in Revit? You can use the civil file to establish shared coordinates which permit exporting the model to DWG or Navisworks for model collaboration/review. You can also use the DWG or points file to create a toposurface. If the points file has coordinates at locations relative to the origin of the survey then you'll need to sort out shared coordinates first.

I'd probably ignore the points file and just use the survey file, assuming it has 3D information like contours etc. Just need to know what you're trying to do.

    ok

can you share how I can establish coordinates using the civil file, my central is zero'd out.

These four blog posts describe the approach I usually take (using a separate site model) and bringing the site to the building as an alternative.

    Post 1, Post 2, Post 3 and Post 4

The cliff notes: in a Site model file link the civil file using Auto Center to Center for positioning. Move the civil file so that the portion of the site that is most relevant is near the Project Origin (project base point and survey point). It should be oriented so that North is UP (true north). It's contours should be at their real elevation. Use Acquire Coordinates and select the DWG. Now the site model is referencing the origin of the civil file for Revit's own shared coordinate system.

If you bring the site to the building then use the same first couple of steps. When you move the civil file you'll also need to rotate it so it is oriented properly relative to your building, the way you expect it to be located on the site. Then move the civil file down so the contour elevation that most closely matches your ground floor elevation is at the building's ground floor level/elevation. Use Acquire Coordinates and the shared coordinate system will match the civil file's origin.

I prefer the separate model because if something has to change later I find it a bit easier to deal with...cross that bridge if/when you get there.
