    Detail Callout on Framing Elevation?

    may be Revit Structural specific, but I'm hoping someone could help me.

    We have a bunch of standard details, drawn as Drafting Views, with detail components, drafting lines, masking regions, etc. Nothing live in the Revit Model. The ones I need to reference show typical steel framing at braced frame connections.

    I have a Framing Elevation showing live members from my RS model. I need to Callout the connections of the framing members and "reference other view" to my Drafting Views.

    When I try to place a Callout on the Framing Elevation, I can get a live Detail view of the connection. When I try to place a Callout, "reference other view," I'm able to choose my Drafting View, but after I place the two corners of the callout, I get the attached message.

    I've tried looking at all the things it's asking (active view, Parameters, Visibility, etc.) but I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be looking for.

    Open up the view properties and verify that you have annotative items visible.

    cganiere,
    Annotative items are visible. VV in the Framing Elevation; Annotation Categories tab shows I have everything checked and showing. The callout I have placed (it's a live callout that I do not want to use) shows. I'm unable to place a callout using "reference other view" that references a Drafting View (even though it shows up in my list of "reference other view.")

    UPDATE: Detail Callout on Framing Elevation?

    I managed to get my callout to show up. Let me see if I can re-trace my steps for anyone else stumbling upon this thread...

    In the Drafting View:
    <Edit Type>
    under Graphics> Callout Tag> choose "Callout Tag 1"
    <Apply>
    The DOZENS of Callout tags I tried to place suddenly appeared in my Framing Elevation, but without detail bubbles.

    On the Manage Tab:
    Settings Panel> Additional Settings pulldown> Callout Tags, choose Type: Callout Tag 1.
    under Graphics> Callout Head, choose "Callout Head" (mine had <none>)
    <Apply>
    In my Framing Elevation, all my callouts disappeared again.

    In the Framing Elevation:
    make sure you have "Annotation Crop" checked and move the Annotation Crop box until the detail bubbles show up. Readjust and VOILA! My Drafting Views can now be used in my Framing Elevations!!!

    If I have my Callout catagory unchecked in my VG window I can recreate the same error message you are getting. Might there be a filter in place on your elevations? or Perhaps you are placing the callout outside of the annotation crop?

    Hi Alex,
    In VG, Callouts were checked to be visible. Just above your post, I updated how I was able to get them to show.

    AND now that I look again, it seems it was all about the Annotation Crop Box all along.

    In fact. I have a questions regarding this.

    I work in RST and in RST we use Span Direction Symbols. The strangest thing happens when your deck crosses a matchline and you have a deck span directions symbol placed on the deck... It disapears!!!. The only way I have gotten around this is to make a symbol that dosent use the deck extents.

    I think this has to do with the fact that the OOTB family picks the extents and when those extents pass over the anno crop it turns the whole family off. Kinda like dim lines.

    Is there a way to use the OOTB span direction and not have it anno crop at a matchline plan?

    Doesn't the Annotation Crop region already default in any view? Whether it's on and visible or not? How do you "never use" them?

    That was part of my issue. Evidently, I had adjusted the Annotation Crop to squeeze my braced frame elevations onto my sheets. The Callout I was placing was on the right-hand side of my Elevation View, very close to my Crop Region. The detail bubble of the Callout defaults to the immediate right of the callout outline, essentially placing it outside of my crop region (and also beyond the Annotation Crop region) <-- this is what gave me the error. Once I played with the the other types of detail/callout views and adjusted the Annotation Crop region, I figured out that's what was giving me the error to begin with.
