    I have been using filter by Family & Type for a while and it works brilliantly, It was added as a feature with 2010

    Not sure if this is what you were thinking, but once you have the filters setup, and once you have a view template created that has the appropriate filters applied, you can then just go to your project browser, select all the views at once that you want to apply the view template to. Now that you have your views selected, right-click and then apply view template. You've now changed all the views at once.
