How To Hide Nested Family In 3D View

I have a family that includes (2) nested families. (It's a rectangular steel frame; the two nested families are the columns and the beams). I'd like to "freeze" the beams in a 3D view, but am not sure how to go about it.

I've played around with categories/ subcategories, filters and made the nested families shared... but have only managed to turn off both at the same time.

Here is an image of the file I'm working with... and an image of what I'd like it to be...

Thanks in advance for any help.

Probably your best (if potentially inconvenient) way would be to go to the 3d view and turn off display of the appropriate structural elements.

Alternately, put a visibility toggle in the family (just remember to add a Model line or two so you can find it again).

Placed the bolts to show only in FINE detail. For detail set it to fine and for other view set it to course or medium detail.
