Question Workflow for demolishing portions of existing features?

For example, say you had a 10'-0"x10'-0"x1'-0" slab that needed a 2'-0"x2'-0"x1'-0" portion of it in the center to be demolished. Would you create a copy in the exact same place of the larger slab with the 2'x2' being demoed already cut out & set that to be created in "New Construction" phase & set the original without the modification to be created in "Existing" & demoed in the "New Construction" phase?

Or, make the item a part and create divisions so that the 2'x2' becomes a separate piece when the view is set to "Show Parts". Make both the 10'x10' & 2'x2' to be created in "Existing" phase, but set the 2'x2' to be removed during "New Construction" & then make sure views are set up to "Show Parts", when necessary?

Or, would you do something entirely different?

    First option.

I wouldn't use Parts for anything that your main documentation depends on, or you are stuck with only showing parts, most of the time.

In terms of maintaining files for As-Built purposes & for files that would be used in future contracts, would you go back and actually delete the "demolished" element prior to the start of a new contract?

I take the orig, copy/paste align it same place/ modify it to the demo'd shape, demo it in the proper phase and then edit the orig sketch tracing the demo'd shape. Yes there will be a line there in the existing phase, but rarely if ever has then been an issue as we aren't showing existing plans typically. If you need to then you can linework those lines out of the existing plans.

In the new phase, I would create an in-place family, of floor type, and create a void of the size/shape to be demo'd, and use that to cut out the existing slab. Demo plans will show demo lines automatically. The hard part is finding the void cut later, so name it something that makes sense, and you can use the Proj Browser to find and edit.

We have some demo void families we use for this sort of thing, obviously don't have the freedom to sketch at will like you would using a model-in-place but it's fine for rectangular shapes. I've thought about adding in linework (a thick blue outline and cross through the void or something) and a visibility parameter, and then linking this to a global parameter called "Show Demo Voids". The idea being that in a project users can switch it on, find and manipulate the voids, then switch it off.

My issue with the first option is that the phase filters aren't going to display correctly (the entire floor will show as demo'd, and in previous+new the whole floor will show as new)
