Revit ungroups groups after upgrading to newer Revit version.

We have a project in Revit 2017 which we're trying to upgrade to Revit 2018 or 2019. Unfortunately, when the upgrade process is almost completed we are presented with a very disturbing error message where Revit needs to ungroup all groups before upgrading. This is obviously detrimental as all 400+ apartments would be ungrouped. What is causing this error and are there any workarounds for this?

We've removed all linked models and upgraded the project which solved the problem for now. However, all the dimension dimension-ed to the linked models are gone. Not a great solution but at least all goups are intact.

The error message can assist others who might encounter your issue. If you share it, we might also be able to assist you with retaining your dimensions. However, since your dimensions were "dimensioned" to linked models, you might have to re-link the models and re-create those dimensions. Is there a way to retain the dimensions when you upgrade to a newer version of Revit?

Copy monitoring the elements that are dimensioned from the links would probably resolve the issue, and mean that you can open the model without the links to make it a little lighter to work in?
