    Room for staircase

Hi. When you do room for staircase, do u use 1 room for the entire stair (8 storey all sharing the same room) or do u do it as 1 room per floor?
Currently I am using 1 room for entire staircase, but have problem with the color scheme plan, coz the boundary of the stair at level 1 is bigger, so the plans on other floors the color of that room is colouring based on 1st storey.
If I follow the typical plan, part of my 1st storey will be left uncoloured..
    Please help..thanks in advance.

I usually use 1 room on each floor. Mainly because the issue you mention and also because in a lot of cases the room has a different room number on each floor as well. But I could go for 1 room for everything as well, depending on the situation.

    Same.

If only for issues later on downstream in the CD process: the room is going to have a door(s) and you're going to have to number it, and we use the room number as the start for that, plus room numbers sometime have the level number within them, plus you'll perhaps have windows, other equipment and you'll want to schedule and having a room on the level is necessary for all of this.

Yes all of that, plus we can tag it in our drawings like all other rooms

    One for each floor
If you have use only one room all the way up, when you do a total floor area for the building, that room only gets counted on the one Level it was placed and NOT on the upper Levels

BTW: I used the "Zoom into Schedule" feature from 2019.2 for the right window. Love that feature!

Typically I do one per stair - if the core of the stair is straight up. I label them as Stair 1, ST-01... Stair 2, ST-02
If stair cores shift around I'd look at 1 per floor (or per segments between the shifts), it'll save you from going insane as rooms are not fluid in section.
Once the required number of stair cores get figured out in early design, they tend to be much less fluid than rooms, hence the naming scheme is separate.

    For doors in stairs I label them as ST-010 (Stair 1, level0), ST-012 (Stair 2, Level 2). Multiple doors in a stair I add a .1 and .2 to them... so ST-011.1 and ST-011.2

DaveP brought up a good point... I do Area plans to deal with that.

Here i thought i was going to be the lone wolf.

Our process is essentially the same as described by Chris. It works well for the most part, but falls apart when the boundaries of the stair change as it goes up the tower. We live with the fact that the room extents does not fill the space at the anomalies, unless it is egregiously different. This is not an issue for us though since we're not concerned about room sq footage......if we care about sf, we usually pick that up in area plans.

If you are required to deliver COBie, then the guidance is that you should use separate volumes for each level rather than a single volume for the whole stair. Ref 'Delivering Construction Operations Building information Exchange (COBie) using Autodesk Revit' - page 96.

    Separate per floor. Always.

I can't think of any real upside to doing a single volume room.
