Why does a new 2019 blank project contain "old" material assets?

Our Revit material library in our template has evolved over the past 15+ years, and is due for some cleaning and updating. Every single material has the little yellow triangle message about updating the render appearance for improved performance.

So I'm trying to wrap my head around materials, assets, and where said assets are stored. One day I would love to get an asset library onto our server and have all of our custom materials pointing to it, but I just haven't had the time, nor do I fully understand how the asset libraries work.

My question is, if I start a brand new, blank project with no template, in 2019.2, open Materials, there are still several materials in the list with the same yellow triangle. If there are the "default" materials, why don't they point to updated physical assets, such as the copper and glass materials?

there is a bit in the Revit help: Help

I think they have changed some rendering images to more realistic ones. But they have not all images swapped to the new & better assets. Seems like everyone has to change now manually the company library assets if you have used the old assets or if you have used your own high quality custom assets u can just continue. The old asset types are still supported. A mapping table would be good to have to do not everything manually... The material editor is so confusing and in my opinion it is just an unfinished part of Revit. A substance designer implemented in Revit would be cool I'm in the happy position to not manage the material stuff LoL

The simple answer here is, not all of the assets got updated in 2019. So there is a mixture of them. The XD team decided it was important to indicate which materials were using the legacy assets. As more of the new assets are created to replace the old ones, fewer and fewer "yellow triangles" will show in files started from a new default template.
