Probable cost estimates using the BIM - inside Revit

Hi guys, I am wondering if anyone has successfully populated a model to produce a probably cost estimate for the client (at least for their scope).
I have dabbled with the idea in the past and most recently did some testing, but I have only gotten as far as producing several different schedules (think different element categories) that each produce a total.

I would like to have some sort of schedule that will take all the total and give me an overall TOTAL for the project.
So we can really see how much a storefront X' x X' impacts the budgets versus two windows and a door (just a simple example).

So far I only thing this is possible by pushing out all the different schedules and combining them in a spreadsheet.

I have also looked at the QTO capabilities inside Navisworks, but I don't see a way to add cost and the workflow is not "life".

I would like to see what everyone had come up with.

I've done it. Lots of work, inputting things in to key schedules. Wouldn't do it again, but it works.

I'm an MEP guy, and I would totally use it to do a mechanical cost estimate. I could schedule the ducts and fittings, pipes, etc simply to get quantities that I could then plunk into a spreadsheet.

As as for a whole building... Eek. I don't think I would attempt that. By the time you input all the cost data, you'll probably wish you had done it another way.

yeah I was able to do partitions as a quick test and doors during the week. Not terrible, I mean its a "probable" cost estimate so I do not need to be GC grade QTO/pricing. I think think it would be great if Revit would this a little easier OOTB. It would be great to quickly VE the design - during the design.
