I user Scott's method, move with 'disjoin' checked by 0mm...

The case that really gets me is when this error gets thrown upon selection.....

    Circular chain of references

    Hi there, follow these steps:
    1. Check the name of the specific element that you are trying to copy, i.e. 300x300 rc column
    2. Navigate to the all the families that are currently loaded in your project in the project browser, this would be found under structural columns, delete it
    3. Re-copy the element, this should work.

Who's reading this in 2018? haha
I had the same problem with a wall (existing) and an added cladding on the facade (new) joined to make the new windows cut them through. Couldn't move or delete existing windows, or change phase for the involved elements. After unjoining the walls I managed to fix everything.
I'm so glad I have find this topic thank you all
