I've recently been rebuilding our door families using sweeps for the panels with a parameter on the profile angle (swinging doors) or horizontal offset (sliding doors) so we can have doors modeled in the open position for 3D presentations. Now I come to our overhead sectional doors, and it's quite a bit trickier. I suppose I could model each panel and figure out how to get them to move along the track with a ton of fun formulas for each one, but I wouldn't be able to array them, which means I'll need different families for different door heights. Even if I simplified it to fully open or fully closed, I'm not sure how I would move and reorient the array.

Anyone have any creative ideas?

What is it you're trying to achieve? Is there a reason to have the door in any other position than fully open or fully closed? I ask this because I too have this overhead door family to build (one day).

Really we only need fully open an fully closed, but I like to spend some time thinking outside the box to determine how feasible things like this are.

One idea I had is to have two arrays; one vertical for closed position, one horizontal for open position. As the door open percentage increases, the array count for the closed position decreases and the array count for the open position increases. Still, I'm not sure if even that is worth the trouble.

4. Absolutely that would be worth the time. I hadn't thought of tying those two parameters together. I could see that being very useful for a roll up door with the much smaller segments. Things like security grilles for malls, pharmacies, etc. Even minor things like bread cabinets.

5. Fully opened and fully closed is what ours do. Just model the panel in the opened position also. No need to make it move. Use visibility parameters.

For a roll up door, sure. It's easy to let it be opened to any percentage. A sectional door? It'll take enough math to make it work that the "wow cool" factor (Imho of course) is extremely outweighed by the "holy crap it's so heavy it cripples everything" factor.
