Nested Family Location Shifting When Changing Types

I'm stumped on this - I am updating my casework. I created a shared door panel family for a flush panel, then save-as and modified to get a glass inset and a raised panel. I load a panel into the base cabinet, set my constraints, flex it then load into the project. So far, so good. But - if I try to change the panel it doesn't behave as expected, either breaking completely or moving around erratically in both the project environment and the family editor

Update - if I constrain the door panels to a different RP it seems to work... Any reason why?

The problem lies in the door panel. Remove equality constraint for height. Make it grow "up", in one direction. Lock all dimensions. Place equality constraint to lock the symbolic swing line's midpoint. Reload panel into the base family and lock the bottom of the panel at the cabinet base.
