Angry nested family parameters to appear in schedules

Hi all, I am trying to build a closet family which has five door panel material options.

First I created the door panel which have five types with five unique materials and five unique material code numbers(one to five). I nested the door panel into the closet family and used the <family type> type of parameter to create a drop down menu of all 5 panels. The family works fine when loaded into a project but my problem is that I cannot schedule the panel type, panel material or material code number of the nested family.

I then tried to connect the material code number(1-5) parameter that I had created into the nested door panel family with an empty parameter that I created in the parent closet family with no luck. the door panel parameter changes to the empty parent closet family parameter and loses the information.

    any suggestions?

It sounds like you are not using shared parameters. Is this true? Are your panel type, panel material, and material code parameters all family parameters?

    Unhappy

Forgot to mention, the parameters are all shared. the problem lies to the connection between the nested and parent family. I cannot link the nested parameters to the parent family because the nested is used in a drop down <family type> type parameter.

If I understand it correctly, you want to use the parameter values in the nested family to change parameter values in the parent family.
Unfortunately linking parameters only works in the parent to nested direction. I think this is to avoid circular references..
There might be a workaround for pushing the data in the selected type back into the parent, because the position of things in a nested family can change instance length parameters in the parent... but I dont know how well that will work.

What you can do instead is make the nested families shared as well, then you can schedule the door panels and parameters directly. Link a parameter from the parent to the nested family to show what its parent is.

yeah you can do a lot with nested shared families. One thing to watch out for though is that any family with a <category> family type parameter will also show all the shared <category> families in the list. So name things clearly and make sure people dont break other families by selecting the wrong shared nested family for another purpose...

If you haven't figured it out (or want to do some reverse engineering) have a look at these doors: http://www.revitforum.org/architectu...ew-thread.html

Unhappy filter schedule to the nested family...

Now I have another issue. When scheduling the parent family I can short and group according to the nested family but cannot filter!
When trying to use a parameter from the nested family to filter the schedule the parameter does not match the parent family it schedules the shared component as individual so the parameter appears in that component and not to the parent.
