Thread: List every Family and its parameters in a document

I'm able to report all parameter types only if the family document (rfa) is open itself, but I'm not so clear on how to do this when a project file is open. I've read in a couple of different places that families can be opened in the background and modified, but I can't figure it out.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

I am not really sure what you mean. If you create a family you use parameters. Those are Instance Parameters (in the Properties Dialogue Box when you select it) or Type Parameters (in the Type Properties). The Parameter Category depends on the kind of parameter and cannot be modified.

Thanks Phillip- I've been working on some other non-Revit projects the last week and haven't had any time to work on it. I thought I had an idea on how to do it. You showed me how to open an .rfa family file by accessing its physical location, but I'm unclear on how to do that from a family in the project.

I'm pretty sure you can open a family file like that as well. Another options is to start a new transaction, loadin the family to the current project, do what you have to do to the family , Save the family?? and then rollback the transaction if you don't want that family loaded.
