Thread: Custom Stair railing

So I'm trying to create a stair guardrail using a curtain wall so that I can insert custom pattern perforated steel panels.

The guardrail is at an angle running with the stair stringer, and I would like for my curtain system grids to be parallel to the stair stringer. Currently, my curtain grid will only go parallel or perpendicular to the ground, not my stair (see image, I want it to create mullions at the red lines).



I also would like a little guidance to confirm that I am creating the panels correctly. I've created a curtain panel which has my custom cutout panel (created as an extrusion) and then my plan is to just insert this custom panel into the curtain grid. I am having trouble when inserting this panel, as Revit says it cannot create the panel...the curtain panel which I am placing my custom panel on is not the same size as the panel family, could this be the problem? Do panels have to be the exact size as their host in order to work?

I have no advice on this, but I would like to add that I was trying to make a glass wall aka curtain wall with the grid rotated (not vertical or horizontal), is this possible?

Keeping a close eye on this thread.

Just thought of something.....wouldn't it be easier to make a "railing post" with this perforated panel, setting it at an angle & then just making a custom railing/balustrade?

OK had 5 minutes. knew I had done this before . "Edit Profile" if need , select curtain wall, in properties under Vertical Grid set angle.

Ok, so I think I got it to work by mark b's method, thanks.

I'm still running into a problem with my curtain wall panel. What I have done to get my custom cutout pattern is create an extrusion for the panel, then traced my cutout pattern as a void extrusion and it cut the hosted extrusion properly. Then I loaded that into my curtain wall panel, but I can't get it to cut the panel properly, it just sits on top of the panel as a yellow outline. Is this one step to far, should I trace my void extrusion outline directly in the curtain wall panel family and not a separate face-based family?

Also, will this allow me to create panels of different heights and widths using the same void extrusion? It's a complicated pattern and I don't want to have to retrace it for every panel.

have you Googled regarding curtain panels with cutouts? I did several months ago and remember coming up with quite a few interesting hits with different methods of doing what I think you want to do.

Isn't this what th OP did?

Duh, yeah it is. I looked at his example wrong, and didn't read the post that carefully. So the answer is yes then. lol
